The tourism industry is connecting Germans with the world. Two thirds of the more than 70 million holiday trips made are trips abroad. As far as foreign travel is concerned, no other nation - apart from China (absolute numbers!) - enjoys travelling as much as the Germans do. Thus, foreign travel is a significant pillar and segment of tourism.
With its high proportion of foreign business our industry also contributes significantly to reducing our export nation's trade balance surplus. Tourism accounts for almost five percent of Germany's overall economic performance. And if you also take into account the indirect and induced value added effects, then the share of tourism in Germany's gross value added even amounts to almost ten percent. Three million people are employed in the German tourism industry, which is more than, for instance, in the automotive industry.
This goes to show that we are an economic heavyweight. The travel industry secures continued growth and employment. Seven percent of all jobs in Germany are dependent on tourism.
