A hopeful start to the tourist and travel year: The most popular destinations in 2009 and trends for 2010

The good news for all travellers is that the prices for holidays arranged through tour operators – whether package or custom-designed holidays – are more affordable than they have been for a long time. Depending on the destination, customers pay an average of between five and eight per cent less than the previous year. Apart from individual special offers, further price reductions are not anticipated. Germans still the world champions of travel: DRV presents figures on the 2009 German travel market

Where do Germans travel to, what are their favourite destinations both in Germany and further afield, and how much money do they spend on foreign holidays?  Answers to these and many other questions on the German travel industry are to be found in the latest edition of the brochure published by the German Travel Association (DRV) "Facts and Figures on the German Travel Market 2009". Where and how did Germans spend their holidays? Overview of the travel year 2009

From a long-term, global perspective the travel and tourism industry is one of the fastest-growing economic sectors. For the German economy, the tourist sector is an essential factor which, in the challenging year of 2009, again proved to be a constant. The overall economic production value of the travel industry in Germany amounted to over € 185 billion in 2009. In this context, the travel industry generated € 94 billion added value. Both figures were unchanged from the previous year. Germans are the largest net foreign exchange contributors in international travel. Cruises still on course for success - DRV analysis: over 1.4 million passengers in 2009

Cruises continue to be popular with Germans, and more and more holiday-makers are enjoying a relaxing break on the water. In the past year, sea and river cruise operators welcomed over 1.4 million passengers in total on board - over ten per cent up on 2008. Sea cruise operators again recorded strong passenger growth as against the previous year, namely an increase of 13.2 percent. This takes the number for the first time to over one million holiday-makers. River cruise operators recorded a rise of 3.2 percent in passenger numbers. Mobility costs rocketing: Travel industry criticises EU climate protection policy

Given the dramatic rises in energy prices, the German travel industry is extremely concerned that the European Union (EU) intends to now make mobility even more expensive. “The emissions trading in the proposed form which has now been announced will pose a threat to the survival of airlines and have a negative impact on the travel industry”, fears Klaus Laepple, President of the Federal Association of the German Tourism Industry (BTW) and President of the German Travel Association (DRV). Strong DRV position on the European level: Dr. H. Jochen Martin elected as ECTAA Vice President

The Managing Director European Affairs of the German Travel Association (DRV), Dr. H. Jochen Martin, has been re-elected as the Vice President of the European Travel Agents’ and Tour Operators’ Associations (ECTAA). The 66-year-old was confirmed in this office by the ECTAA Board of Directors, on which all members of the umbrella association are represented at its AGM in Sofia. The sexual exploitation of children in tourism is a problem which concerns not only holiday destinations (mainly South-East Asia, Latin America, Africa and Eastern Europe), but also outbound countries like Germany. Since travel and tourism infrastructures like hotels and airlines are often used in this context, the travel and tourism industry has taken steps to help stem the sexual exploitation of minors in travel and tourism. ...
